Zellige Tile vs Ceramic Tile: What You Actually Get for the Price
Zellige is handmade, hand-glazed clay tile with an uneven, light-catching surface, while ceramic tile is machine-pressed, uniform and usually much cheaper. Choose zellige when you want depth, variation and a finish that looks different in every light. Choose standard ceramic when you want a flat, consistent surface at the lowest cost. Both are fired clay, so the real difference is how they are made and what that does to the look, the installation and the price.

How Are Zellige and Ceramic Tile Made?
Ceramic tile is pressed into a mold by machine, glazed by line and fired in large batches. Every tile is cut to the same size, so the result is flat, even and predictable. That consistency is what makes it affordable and easy to install.
Zellige starts as natural clay from the Fes region of Morocco. Artisans shape each tile by hand, glaze it, fire it in a kiln and then chisel the edges one by one. Because no two tiles go through the process identically, no two come out identical. Size, thickness, glaze depth and edge all vary slightly, and that variation is the point. If you want the full background, see our guide to what zellige tile is.

How Do Zellige and Ceramic Tile Look Different?
Ceramic reads as a clean, flat plane. Zellige reads as a surface with movement. The glaze pools slightly at the edges and thins at the high points, so light bounces in many directions instead of one. A zellige wall looks different at 8 a.m. than it does at 6 p.m., and a ceramic wall mostly does not.

That is also why zellige hides what ceramic cannot. Small chips, pits and shade shifts look like character rather than defects. We explain what is normal in our post on chips and pits in zellige. If you compare zellige against the most common wall tile, our zellige vs subway tile guide covers the six differences that matter.

Is Zellige More Expensive Than Ceramic?
Yes, per square foot. Handtile zellige squares are $19.62 per sq ft, sold in boxes of 5 sq ft at $98.10 per box. Mass-produced ceramic is often priced at a small fraction of that. The gap is real, and it comes from hand labor, small-batch firing and shipping from Fes.
The gap matters less than it looks on a small project. A kitchen backsplash is often 25 to 40 square feet, so the tile upgrade is a modest share of a total remodel budget that also includes labor, countertops and cabinets. A full floor in zellige is a different calculation. Our zellige tile cost breakdown shows how to budget tile, installation and overage together, and our guide on real zellige vs zellige-look tile explains where cheaper lookalikes fall short.
Is Zellige Harder to Install Than Ceramic?
It is slower, not mysterious. Because each tile varies slightly, installers set it with thin, even grout lines, back-butter the tile and check the plane as they go. A tiler who has only set machine-made ceramic can do it, but one who has worked with handmade tile will do it faster and with fewer surprises. Our 7 installation mistakes guide is a good checklist to hand your installer. Sealing is also part of the job, which we cover in do zellige tiles need to be sealed.
Warm undertones keep this gray from feeling flat, which is exactly what plain gray ceramic often does.
Which Should You Choose: Zellige or Ceramic?
Choose zellige for backsplashes, bathroom walls, shower walls, fireplaces and feature walls, where the surface is seen up close and the extra cost is spread over a small area. Choose standard ceramic for large floors, rentals, kids' bathrooms and anywhere budget or uniformity comes first. Many homes use both: ceramic for the large, quiet surfaces and zellige for the one wall people actually look at.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is zellige tile better than ceramic tile?
Neither is better in every case. Zellige is better for character, light and a handmade look. Ceramic is better for budget, uniformity and large areas.
Is zellige a type of ceramic?
Technically yes. Zellige is glazed, kiln-fired clay, which puts it in the ceramic family. What separates it is that it is shaped, glazed and finished by hand rather than by machine.
Why is zellige so much more expensive than ceramic?
Hand labor, small-batch kiln firing and the cost of shipping from Morocco. Each tile passes through artisan hands several times, which a pressed ceramic line does not require.
Can I mix zellige and ceramic in the same room?
Yes, and it is a common way to manage budget. Use ceramic on large, low-visibility surfaces and zellige as the accent wall, backsplash or shower niche.
Does zellige need more maintenance than ceramic?
Slightly. It benefits from sealing and gentle cleaners, as covered in our cleaning guide, while standard glazed ceramic is generally more forgiving.
