How to Use Zellige Tile in a Kitchen (Without Getting It Wrong)
Zellige tile in a kitchen looks unlike anything else.
The way light moves across the surface. The slight variation in each piece. The depth you don't get from factory tile.
But zellige isn't subway tile. You can't just slap it up and call it done. There are a few things worth knowing before you commit — so here's the practical version.
Where to use it
The backsplash is the obvious choice. And it works beautifully — especially full-height behind the range.
But zellige goes further than that.
Some of the best kitchens we've seen use it on a kitchen island facing, a window surround, or as a narrow band running behind open shelving. These smaller applications let the tile do the work without overwhelming the space.
What doesn't work as well: floors. Zellige is glazed and can be slippery when wet. Stick to walls.
What finish to pick
Zellige is naturally matte to satin — the glaze has a soft sheen, not a mirror finish. That's part of what makes it look handmade rather than mass-produced.
If your kitchen gets a lot of direct light, that low sheen is your friend. It won't glare.
In darker kitchens, lighter colorways like Blanc or Menthe open things up. In kitchens with warm wood tones, Argile fits naturally.
Grout color matters more than you think
With zellige, grout is part of the design — not an afterthought.
Most designers go one of two directions:
Tight match: Grout close to the tile color creates a seamless, almost monolithic look. Works especially well with white or off-white zellige.
Contrast: Dark grout on light tile emphasizes the grid and each individual piece. Draws more attention to the handmade variation.
Avoid unsanded grout for larger joints. Zellige isn't perfectly uniform, so joints vary slightly — sanded grout handles that better.
Installation notes
A few things zellige installers get wrong the first time:
Back-buttering is non-negotiable. Apply adhesive to the tile, not just the wall. The irregular back of zellige needs full coverage to bond properly.
Don't rush the layout. Lay it out dry first. Zellige tiles vary slightly in size and thickness — sorting and arranging before you set them gives you a better final result.
Seal it. Zellige is porous. A penetrating sealer before grouting and again after protects against kitchen grease and staining. Reapply once a year.
What about maintenance?
Easier than people expect.
Wipe down with a damp cloth for everyday cleaning. Avoid acidic cleaners — no vinegar, no citrus-based products. They'll dull the glaze over time.
The variation in zellige actually helps in a kitchen: minor splashes and marks are far less visible than they'd be on a perfectly flat, uniform tile.
