Can You Use Zellige Tile in a Shower?

Short answer: yes.

Zellige tile works in showers. It's been used in hammams — Moroccan steam baths — for centuries. Wet environments are nothing new to this tile.

But there's a right way to do it. Skip a step and you'll have problems. Do it properly and you'll have one of the most beautiful showers imaginable.

Here's what you need to know.

Why People Hesitate

Zellige is a handmade, porous clay tile. That word — porous — makes people nervous about using it in wet areas.

The concern makes sense. Porous materials can absorb water, and water in a shower is constant.

But porous doesn't mean unusable. It means you need to seal it. Natural stone, terracotta, bejmat — all porous, all used in wet areas every day. Zellige is no different.

The key is preparation. Not the tile itself.

The Non-Negotiables

Before zellige goes anywhere near a shower, you need four things in place:

1. Proper waterproofing behind the tile. This is the most important step — and it has nothing to do with the tile itself. The substrate behind zellige must be fully waterproofed. Use a waterproof membrane (RedGard, Wedi board, Schluter Kerdi) on the walls and floor. The tile doesn't waterproof the shower. The membrane does.

2. Seal the tile before installation. Zellige is porous and needs to be sealed before grouting. Apply a penetrating sealer (not a topical coating) to the tile surface before it goes on the wall. This prevents the grout from staining the clay body during installation.

3. Choose the right grout. Use an unsanded grout for zellige — the tile surface is uneven and sanded grout can scratch it. Epoxy grout is a strong option for showers since it's non-porous and mold-resistant. White or off-white grout tends to work best with zellige's natural variation.

4. Seal again after installation. Once the grout is fully cured, seal the entire surface again. This is your moisture barrier in use. Reapply once a year to keep it protected.

Where Zellige Works in a Shower

Zellige shines in almost every part of a shower when properly sealed:

  • Feature wall — a full zellige wall behind the showerhead is the most popular use. The reflective glaze catches light beautifully in a wet environment.
  • Niche — a small zellige niche inside a tiled shower is a simple, high-impact detail.
  • Floor — zellige can work on shower floors with the right anti-slip finish and heavy sealing, but it's not ideal. The surface variation makes drainage trickier. Bejmat or a mosaic tile is usually a better floor choice.
  • Full enclosure — zellige on all four walls of a walk-in shower is stunning. Plan your waterproofing carefully and make sure your installer is experienced with handmade tile.

What to Watch Out For

Zellige isn't the same as ceramic or porcelain. A few things to keep in mind:

Surface variation is normal. Zellige tiles are handmade — they're not perfectly flat. The slight undulation and variation in glaze is part of the character, not a defect. Make sure your tiler knows this before they start.

Grout lines will vary slightly. Because the tiles aren't perfectly uniform, grout lines won't be perfectly consistent. This is expected and looks intentional. Don't fight it.

Reseal annually. This isn't a big job — a penetrating sealer applied once a year keeps your zellige shower looking great indefinitely. Skip it and you risk staining or moisture absorption over time.

Hire a tiler who's worked with handmade tile. Standard porcelain installation technique doesn't always translate. Zellige requires more care in leveling, back-buttering, and grout application. An experienced installer makes a significant difference.

The Payoff

Get it right, and a zellige shower is genuinely hard to compete with.

The handmade glaze catches light differently at every angle. The slight surface variation creates depth that flat, glazed tile can't touch. And in a shower — where light hits wet surfaces all day — zellige is at its most beautiful.

It's not a tile for people who want zero maintenance and zero thought. It's for people who want their bathroom to actually mean something.
